Egypt: Sphinx & Giza dating

The Giza Plateau is where the debate about an older civilisation started for many people, through Robert Schoch and John Anthony West's work on the Sphinx in the early 1990s. The weathering is real and measured. Its cause is still argued in print, including a 2026 book by geologist Colin Reader.

The pyramids themselves have been radiocarbon dated several times. The results point to the Old Kingdom, with an offset of a few centuries that is mostly explained by old wood. Muon imaging has found two unknown internal spaces. The 2025 claims of vast structures under Khafre remain unverified, and the method's 2022 paper was retracted in August 2026.

The Great Sphinx is thousands of years older than Egyptologists think (water-erosion hypothesis)
Weathering on the Sphinx and the walls of its enclosure was caused by rainfall and run-off in a wetter climate, so the Sphinx's core body was carved...
Leading EdgeOpen question
The Sphinx faced Leo rising at the spring equinox around 10,500 BCE
The lion-bodied Great Sphinx faces due east, toward the spring-equinox sunrise. Around 10,500 BCE the constellation Leo, the lion, rose in that direction...
Leading EdgeMeasured sky: Leo rose before the equinox Sun at Giza from about 11,400 to 8,800 BCE, so 10,500 BCE fits; whether the Sphinx was built for this, and when, is an open question
Radiocarbon dates from Giza mortar fall in the Old Kingdom era, with an unresolved offset
Radiocarbon dates on charcoal and plant fragments in the Giza pyramids' mortar place the dated construction in the Old Kingdom era, not thousands of years...
MainstreamMeasured: mortar charcoal dates to c. 2900–2600 BCE; the cause of a 100–400-year offset is still debated
The Giza pyramids mirror Orion's Belt as it looked in 10,500 BCE (Orion Correlation)
The three main Giza pyramids were laid out to copy the three stars of Orion's Belt, and the layout matches the sky as it appeared around 10,500 BCE, so the...
Leading EdgeOpen question: the shape match tests as statistically notable; the 10,500 BCE date is not supported by the layout's angle
The Fourth Dynasty completed an older Giza site (the 'legacy' or restoration hypothesis)
The Giza pyramids were largely built in the Old Kingdom, but on an older plan and older foundations: the bedrock mound, the Great Pyramid's underground...
Leading EdgeOpen question: the built pyramids date to the Old Kingdom; no dating method has yet reached the bedrock and underground parts
The Great Pyramid's precision and its 1:43,200 scale model of the Earth
The Great Pyramid is aligned to true north with a precision that points to advanced knowledge, and its height and base perimeter reproduce the Earth's polar...
Leading EdgeMeasured: aligned within about 4 arc minutes and within about 1% of Earth's proportions at 1:43,200; whether the scale is intentional is an open question
Hidden spaces inside the Great Pyramid detected by cosmic-ray muons
Muon imaging has revealed large previously unknown voids inside Khufu's pyramid.
MainstreamMeasured: two unknown voids confirmed
Satellite radar reveals vast structures beneath the Khafre pyramid
A new way of processing satellite radar (SAR) data shows shafts, chambers and huge cube-shaped structures hundreds of metres to about 2 km beneath the...
Leading EdgeOpen question: unverified; the method's 2022 paper was retracted in Aug 2026
