The hills near Visoko, Bosnia, are ancient pyramids

Status: Leading Edge Verdict: Open question: geologists describe natural hills; no construction dated

The claim: Visočica hill and neighbouring hills near Visoko, Bosnia and Herzegovina, are giant pyramids built tens of thousands of years ago, with tunnels beneath them.

Where the evidence stands: Proposed by Semir Osmanagić from 2005, with excavation and tourism since. Geologists who have examined the hills describe tilted and fractured layers of Miocene sediment, a common natural landform. No peer-reviewed study has dated construction. We record the proponents' view and the geology neutrally.

Background

The 'Pyramid of the Sun' (Visočica) has a strikingly regular triangular face. Osmanagić's foundation points to flat slab-like 'paving' and block-like conglomerate as human work, and has excavated a tunnel network (Ravne). In 2006 a group of European archaeologists objected publicly to state support for the project. Robert Schoch, the same geologist who argues for an older Sphinx, visited in 2006 and concluded the hill is natural.

What has been measured

Dates, measurements and documented findings, kept separate from interpretation.

Proponents' main arguments and cited evidence

  • Proponents point to the hills' regular shape and orientation, and to slabs and blocks they interpret as cut and placed. [3]

The mainstream position and its evidence

  • Schoch reports that the slabs are naturally fractured sedimentary beds and the hill a natural formation. [1]
  • A 2006 statement by European archaeologists called on authorities to stop supporting the project. [2]

What evidence would help settle it

Dated, unambiguous construction features such as tool marks, foundations or bonded masonry, published with peer review, would change this entry. So would an independent geological survey that found structures sediment layers cannot explain.
