Baalbek's giant stones are older than the Roman temple
The claim: The 800-tonne trilithon blocks in the podium of Baalbek's Temple of Jupiter, and the 1,000-tonne-plus blocks in the nearby quarry, were cut by an older, pre-Roman civilisation.
Where the evidence stands: Archaeologists attribute the podium and the quarry blocks to the Roman-era temple project. Alternative authors argue that the scale and style of the lowest courses differ from the Roman work above them. Measurement settles the size of the blocks, not who cut them.
Background
In 2014 a German–Lebanese team excavating the quarry found the largest worked stone block known from antiquity, about 19.6 × 6 × 5.6 m and roughly 1,650 tonnes, lying beside the famous ~1,000-tonne 'Stone of the Pregnant Woman'. The three trilithon blocks already set in the temple podium weigh about 750–800 tonnes each. The quarry blocks were apparently abandoned partly because of cracks and weak rock.
What has been measured
Dates, measurements and documented findings, kept separate from interpretation.
Proponents' main arguments and cited evidence
- Proponents argue the megalithic lower courses differ in weathering and style from the Roman masonry above, suggesting reuse of an older foundation. [3]
The mainstream position and its evidence
- The excavators interpret the quarry and the podium as parts of the same Roman building programme. [1]
What evidence would help settle it
Dated material sealed beneath the trilithon courses, or tool-mark and weathering studies comparing lower and upper courses, would test the two views.
