The megalithic walls of Sacsayhuamán and Ollantaytambo predate the Inca
The claim: The giant, tightly fitted polygonal stones at Sacsayhuamán and Ollantaytambo were built by an older culture, and the Inca later built on top of them.
Where the evidence stands: Spanish-era chronicles and archaeology attribute the great walls to the Inca from the 15th century, and experiments have reproduced the stone-working with hammerstones. Alternative authors point to differences between the megalithic lower work and the smaller masonry above. Earlier, pre-Inca occupation of the Sacsayhuamán hill is accepted, but it has not been tied to the megalithic walls.
Background
Sacsayhuamán's zig-zag walls include stones estimated at more than 100 tonnes, fitted without mortar. Jean-Pierre Protzen studied the quarries and showed how the Inca could cut, dress and fit such blocks by pounding with harder stones and repeated trial fitting. Recent Peruvian work at Sacsayhuamán has investigated early (pre-Inca) architecture on the site.
What has been measured
Dates, measurements and documented findings, kept separate from interpretation.
Proponents' main arguments and cited evidence
- Proponents note the contrast between enormous, precisely fitted lower blocks and cruder upper masonry, and the absence of written Inca records describing how the largest stones were moved. [4]
What evidence would help settle it
Dating of material sealed beneath the largest blocks, and surface-exposure dating of the fitted faces.
